NY TRAVEL PREPARATION

Travelling Solo in New York

It’s the first time for me to visit USA. The first time get a bite of the Big Apple. As a solo woman traveller, it is important to plan everything ready prior to this journey…or on every journey indeed.
This will be the first among a series posts about my journey to New York City. So, here’s some helpful tips to prepare for your trip:

  1. Prepare your itinerary
To plan my journey, I use combination of Tripomatic application and Google map. Tripomatic is my favourite travel planner as it can easily locate the famous sight seeing places in the map. You can filter the attraction according to particular categories such as architecture or food. You can, then, create the trip on your desired date and save it for later. Mine will be something like this:

Since the app does show the way to go on foot or by car but not by public transportation, here the Google map plays an important role. Alternatively, you can also use the official trip planner provided by MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) at 'http://goo.gl/DKJn3d'. This will inform you the best itinerary options by subway and bus with minimum transfer or walking distance. However, many points of interest in Manhattan, the heart of New York, is close to each other. So, you better off sightseeing on foot. Plan ahead to minimise the transportation riding time and cost.

  2. Subway map
You may want to download New York City subway map on your mobile device. Since I’m using iOS the best app for me is mTRO NYC. It is working well on my device with intuitive interface. You can set the departure dan arrival station and select which trip you prefer.

  3. City passes
Many places in New York require expensive entrance tickets. Without even knowing, you could easily spend several hundreds dollar just to get into one attraction to another. There're several options of city pass if you want to save your bucks. Here’s some of them:

    -New York City Pass: 'http://goo.gl/5yk8VY'
This is useful for those planning to visit the most popular places in the city. With $144, you can get 46% discount for six top attractions including Empire State Building Observation, Statue of Liberty, and American Museum of Natural History. You can use the pass within nine days. Please refer the link for full information.

-New York City Explorer Pass, two types:
Flexible: 'http://goo.gl/TokeJz'. This pass is great for those who desire flexibility in the trip as they can select any 3, 5, 7, or 10 attractions combined from 57 attractions available. The pass available within 30 days.

Customised: 'http://goo.gl/Tt47tc'. The pass that is perfect for those having a fixed itinerary already. You can build your pass by select any number or attractions available from 65 attractions.  Pass is valid for 30 days after the first visit. Note: Please don’t mistaken the 9/11 Tribute Centre Tour available in the options with the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

  4. SIM cards and data plan

Travelling alone means you will highly relied on your mobile devices to help you go around. I highly recommend you to prepare a data plan to go along the voyage. There are several providers available but I think Ready SIM will be the most convenient for the short time traveller. You can get it here: 'http://goo.gl/SY7yeZ'. They offer Talk+Text+Data package, the Data Only package, and the so-called Long Distance option for making international calls. First you have to choose which plan do you want and choose the data quantity, like 500MB, 1GB, or 2GB.

I was using the 1GB Data Only card which was enough to go around for a week. I use it for extensively checking Google maps, browsing, and sometimes social media. You can get it shipped to your own country or to your booked hotel address for convenience. The second option, of course, cheaper. Don’t forget to ask the employee there to receive your package though. My package arrived within a week from the day I placed my order. Once you received it, insert to your device, and send your hotel ZIP code in an SMS to number 7850. You will, shortly (about 5~10 minutes), get a response of card activation, and the phone number for that card. Really easy.

  5. Electrical Plug Converter
The best is to have the international converter, like the one that you can reassembled according to the countries. Here is the guide:

Japanese Noodle House in Myeongdong: 정통 일본 우동

If you walk around Myeongdong area and looking for a nice meal this Japanese restaurant can be a good option. The name of this store is 정통 일본 우동 (Jeongthong Ilbon Udong).

Located just beside the Embassy of China, the place with typical Japanese decorations is relatively easy to find though they don't write the name in English. They sell various kinds of Japanese noodles called udon (우동) with other side dishes. So, the way you order is: order the udon - choose the additional side dishes like fried veggies, boiled egg, or rice ball - choose drinks - then pay.

Koala ordered a 옛날 우동 (yetnal udong) which is noodle with half boiled egg, seaweed, and tofu skin filled with glass noodles costs KRW 4800. I ordered a plain udon called 가케 우동 (gakhe udong) costs KRW 3500 and picked fried chicken side dish costs KRW 1500.

The noodles taste great, love the soup! Try the fried tofu side dish if you come to this place. Restaurant opens daily from 10:00-22:00.

    Sulbing (설빙)

This is a very famous Korean ice flake dessert cafe, called Sulbing (설빙). Though serving the summer treat, the cafes almost always packed in any season.

This brand has already opened many branches all over Korea which you can find your nearest one using this store locator:

We are visiting the one in Suwon just across the side gate of Sungkyunkwan University. Place is nice with plenty of seats and various selections of bingsus. The favourite one is injeolmi bingsu (인절미 빙수) which is shaved ice covered by bean powder and chewy rice cakes. Every bingsu served with sweet condensed milk separately and some additional toppings available like ice cream or the sweet red bean paste called ‘pat’ (팥) costs around KRW 1,000. Standard Americano is KRW 3,800 but the main menu is bingsu though they served also toast and other beverages.

They are very creative with bingsu variations and new menus come seasonal. We ordered the winter menu strawberry bingsu (생딸기 설빙) which costs KRW 9,500. You can check the complete menu here

Coffee Nara Holla (커피 나라 올라)

We love this small homy cafe called Coffee Nara Holla (커피 나라 올라). With warm and cozy decoration, this place is good for studying or enjoying small talks in the wintry afternoon.

Koala tried Korean citron tea called yujacha (유자차) that is famous during winter and I just ordered Martinellis Apple Juice. The warm tea costs KRW 4000 and the juice for KRW 3500. Hot Americano price is KRW 3000 and KRW 3500 for the ice one. Yujacha is sweet enough with tangy citron flavour, just perfect for winter. Besides beverages, they serve sandwiches and toasts as well.

Place is open on weekdays 10:00-22:00, Sunday and holiday 13:00-22:00, but close on Saturday.
This cafe is located in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, just around Sungkyungkwan University. Don’t forget to ask this kind of coupon where you can get one stamps for every beverage you ordered and get free Americano after collecting 10 stamps.

    쉼표 Cafe (Suim Phyo Cafe)

This is our favourite cafe! This petite and quiet cafe is located beside Sejong Cyber University. Having two-storey building, the first floor is a bakery shop and second one is a nice space to enjoy it. The name of this cafe is 쉼표 (suim phyo), a Korean word meaning rest, which is pretty true as the place is usually quiet.

They also have some books and puzzles to play together with friends.
The coffee is good but breads are great! Highly recommend you the mocha bun with crispy top (KRW 1000) or mellon bun (KRW 1200). Americano coffee is quite standard but relatively cheaper, price is KRW 2500 for hot and 2800 for ice. My favourite here is green tea late, KRW 3000 for hot and KRW 3300 for ice.

Place is open everyday except first Sunday every month. Bakery opens daily … to … and the second floor close at 10 pm.

    LGA Cafe

If you are travelling around Sungkyunkwan university and looking for a place to hang out you might want to check out LGA cafe. It is located near sungkyunkwan station, right beside Paris Baguette. Because the entrance is quite small, you must look carefully to find it. It is on the second floor of the building so, don’t be hesitant to go in. Contrary to the building appearance, the room inside the cafe is quite spacious. The atmosphere is warm, the chairs are comfortable, and there are some books and blankets if you are planning to stay for longer period of time.

Here you can find a variety of cakes, beverages, and many kinds of bingsu, the korean shaved ice with toppings. We didn’t try the coffees but they actually look convincing, really. Standard Americano is 3500 won for regular size and KRW 4000 for the large one.
The price of bingsu varies between KRW 7000 - 13000. We opted this delicious strawberry bingsu with price of KRW 9800.

Hello world, this is our first greeting ever as traveller. First, let us introduce ourselves.

We, at the time I wrote this, are graduate students from Sungkyunkwan University and Sejong University, South Korea. So, it is our mission to provide our readers a detailed info regarding direction, foods and drinks, culture, and many more of the places to visit around the globe. We will start our journey from South Korea and slowly but sure, we will add more countries to our collection.

Please join us and let's discover world's hidden treasures together.

    Regards,
    -Koala-
